Serena Williams
“The amount of control men feel the need to exert over women is petty-level with this one” actress
Elizabeth Banks stated in a tweet, but what is she talking about? She was talking about sexism in tennis.
You may be thinking “Why in tennis? Why should this matter?”, well imagine playing in a grand slam
showdown, then having to pay $17,000 in fines against you for calling someone out… This because
a reality to Serena Williams, when she was fined for smashing her racket, and for calling the umpire a
thief. What came before all of this? The umpire giving a penalty warning saying Serena was being
illegally coached. “He’s never taken a game from a man because they said “thief”. For me it blows my
mind. But i’m going to continue to fight for women.” Serena stated at a news conference.

Not only has Serena struggled with penalties, she has been dress coded for wearing a catsuit.
The catsuit was to help her blood circulation because she had a hard time giving birth. At the time
there was no dress code, but recently the French Tennis Federation banned all players from wearing
“form fitting-clothing at the tennis tournament”. Serena isnt the only one dealing with dress code related
problems too. Alize Cortez was given a violation for fixing her shirt because it was on backwards. Even
though there are no rules against it.

Serena is not the only people to notice this though. Billie Jean King spoke about this too tweeting,
“When a woman is emotional, she’s “hysterical” and she’s penalized for it. When a man does the same
he is “outspoken & and there are no repercussions. Thank you Serena Williams, for calling out this
double standard. More voices are needed to do the same.”. And CNN reported that Retired US tennis
star Andy Roddick tweeted, "I've regrettably said worse and I've never gotten a game penalty."” why
are men able to do so, but not women? This is still a relevant problems, even though its 2018.
We need to change this.

Even though this is just tennis, it speaks to more than just that. If there is sexism in tennis,
where else is it? Serena Williams and others have expressed their thoughts on what is happening
and we need to listen and change that,

I think something is wrong with the blog itself (it could be just an error on my screen) but your words are going on the paper and it looks like their is no paragraphs.
ReplyDeleteTo be completely honest, I think that if she should just ask permission to wear the catsuit. Going onto a court with dress-code breaking clothes isn't a good idea. If she asked permission and got denied, then that would be discrimination, but it doesn't seem like she asked at all.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, it's ridiculous that they allow men to have insane overreactions but expect women to not. Either say that no one can react negatively or say that everyone can. Specifically allowing men to but not women is obvious discrimination.
Wait, didn't it say that there wasn't a dress code?
DeleteOh, I misread the article. Somehow I ignored the "at the time there was no dress code" part. I definitely agree it's discrimination then.
DeleteI should say that this article is pretty well written, but smaller paragraphs could help it be more easily read.
I definitely have to agree with Joel. If she should of had just asked for permission. Very well written though!
ReplyDeleteExplain your thinking, Aleksyia.
DeleteI think if she asked if this was okay first before wearing the outfit. Meaning if she had difficulty giving birth then she should tell them so they could give possible exceptions. But at the same time if she was not informed that they recently changed the rules then why is she penalized? I think that if woman get penalized for these things then so should men.
DeleteLina, you hit it on the nose when you imply that sports news is often a lot bigger that sports. Interesting stuff. I've always wondered where tennis developed it's weirdly specific rules (ex. at Wimbeldon everyone has to wear white and all women must wear skirts). Hm.
ReplyDeleteOk, the formatting looks off. Let's look into that. It also need paragraphing to help with organization and another round of revision for little errors.
Good job bestiiiii!!! but I think something is wrong with your text box or something..
ReplyDeleteYour article was good but you do tend to repeat yourself. BUT GREAT JOB KEEP ON THAT JOURNALISM GRIND XOXO
ReplyDeleteThis article gave me more of an interest in whats going on in the world of sports and showed that sports is more than just sports and it can have bigger problems inside it, this article is very well written and has an amazing flow.
ReplyDeleteGood Job putting a lot of detail in your article I got a lot of information from this. you did however repeat just a little bit but still good job
