Homeless Night at Kennedy High School

“You’re paying to sleep in a box? Is that what I’m hearing?” Areigna Ralston, a fellow student at Kennedy high School replied when I asked her what she thought about Homeless night.  Many people don’t realize this, but there are a lot of homeless people. In Iowa alone, there are around 1,500 individuals and 1,256 families homeless, not even in shelters. Although Iowa has affordable housing, not all people can get a house that fits their needs and is affordable. Kennedy is doing something to help change that. No, they aren’t going to sleep in a box, but they will camp around Kennedy. They are going to help raise money and awareness for shelters, so they can provide for more people that need help.
When I first heard about this, I thought this was a joke! I thought kids were just going to mock homeless people, which I felt was rude. When I later found out about the true reason for this, I discovered what an amazing idea this was. Not only was it helping others, it was raising awareness, and the participating students get an understanding of homelessness. I feel like homelessness locally isn’t talked about because we don’t see it as much and just hear about it in other places.
“I think it is a good way to fit in someone’s shoes” Hailey Cutter, a freshman at KHS says. Not everyone knows what its like to not sleep in the comfort of your home. I know that this isn't the same as being actually homeless, but it at least brings some knowledge to the situation. Imagine not sleeping in your own home, or in your own bed. You aren't struggling for food, or other resources. This is what happens to many people all over the world. The money collected is going to shelters that can help more people and shelters gain resources. This event is the perfect way to end kindness week.  Friday, October 26, 2018 is homeless night at Kennedy.
To participate you pay $15, and you can donate more throughout the night. At this homeless night, you can camp or just stay a while, and hang out. You can donate money while there and if you donate $20 or more, then you get a t-shirt too. This is a very fun idea and supports a great cause that is often overlooked. I think that this would be very fun to be apart of.

  1. I thought that this was very well written, but at the same time I think that you should of asked Mr. Kline...I do understand that you decided to write this on the day it was due! LOL! The flow was well done but I would redomend for you not to add, "[Homeless night was on the night i wrote this and i struggled to find people to talk to lol rip]." Into the article, and maybe in the comments.

  3. I think you chose a relevant topic, and was found the article interesting. However, I noticed you added your own opinion in the article, and that really took away from it being a news story and not just response paper.

  4. I thought that this piece was pretty well written, and had good transitions and overall flow. However, you added your opinion a bit in the article, and that made it less of an article and more of a response to this event. But I liked how you added quotes to this piece, even though you struggled with finding people and did it last minute. Also, I enjoyed how you added in the prices for the event, and where the donations are going to.

  5. I think that this piece is well written and the quotes fit where they are.

I still think they could have come up with a better way to help the homeless than saying "pay money to do less than what you already can", because that isn't a very enticing offer.

  6. This was a good topic because I think a lot of people had a lot of different opinions on it. I heard that some people did end up sleeping in boxes and I thought that was a little stereotypical. I agree with someone saying it would've been a good idea to get more people's opinions on this topic. I liked all of the detail given about Iowa's homeless rate and how you explained what this whole event was and is trying to do.

  7. I thought your lead was great, not just because it was my quote. (Okay maybe that's part of the reason). But, it caught my attention. I also liked the stats you put in the article. However, I do have to agree that adding your opinion kind of took away from the fact that it was supposed to just strictly be news. But I still loved it and I thought it was AMAZING. Especially that lead ;)

  9. I think this is written well. The topic is very relevant and really explains what homeless night actually is. I didn't know what it was before this, but you explained it very well. Maybe you could change the way you worded the parts that include affordable. Because it seemed to me that you said that the houses here are affordable, but you used that they aren't as a reason people are homeless. Other than that you had great transitions and did a good job getting the point across. gOoD jOb gURrLlLYyy!! <<<3333
