Media Law And Fake News Synthesis and Reflection
Media Law
You ever wonder who those "anonymous" sources are?
I certainly couldn't tell you who, nobody except the writers know but they
can't. Media law. Heard of it? Ever wonder why that is? It is the group of are
laws in place to protect journalist, the sources, and even the story. Media law
is consistent of many smaller laws. Laws like Libel, Invasion of Privacy,
Shield Law, and Obscenity.
Libel is when a publication was false, and it damaged someone’s
reputation or image. To prevent that try to use cation when stating something
as a fact and be 100% honest. This is important because if I choose pursue
journalism in the future wouldn't want to make myself seem discreditable, hurt
someone, and there are punishments for hurting someone’s reputation. Like libel
is invasion of privacy. Invasion of privacy. is when you give inaccurate
information, trespassing, or using pictures that were unwanted. I learned from
this that I can't go anywhere I want, and I must be careful about what images I
use, how I got them, and if the people in the picture agreed to the picture,
similar to invasion of privacy. Using obscene content in a publication has also
taught me that when write I cannot write anything that could be seen at
offensive or explicit. I learned from this that I have to watch what I say and
think about it from all perspectives. Lastly there is a shield law to protect
anonymous source from being exposed, and from any outside people wanting to
talk to the anonymous people. This also protects the person from having to
reveal certain information to the police or in court. I now know that if
someone is scared but wants to tell their story I can’t help them by suggesting
the shield law.
Fake News
Did you hear about how Malia Obama was expelled from
Harvard? Do you believe it? I know I don't because that was just an example of
fake news. Fake news is found almost everywhere but it can be hard to spot at
times. It can look like a real news source, or copy sites like CNN, KCRG, ESPN,
or other sites used to spread news. Fake news is used at times to spread
controversial opinions or to trick people into believing crazy, odd, or usually
disbelieved stories. Fake news can be easily believed by many people because
they may not fact check it. Fake news sites will try to make their article or
website look real or they may copy reputable news sources format to seem more
reliable. From learning this in class I have been able to spot more fake news
then I have been able to before and fact check them. Fake news becomes
especially relevant during political season or any time when there is
controversy on a topic.
Fake news articles will likely use a clickbait to captivate
the reader. Clickbait is now a red light for me, because it likely is the title
to a fake or exaggerated news article. Clickbait titles for example will sound
like “Girl opens a gift from her father 18 years later and you would never
guess what it was…”. Clickbait tricks somebody into reading something that has
nothing to do with the title sometimes.
From learning about all of this. The fake news, media law,
and everything in between I understand now that not everything I will see, or
read will be true, and I have to follow the media law so that I’m not the one
creating fabricated/fake or problematic news. I believe all these laws and
rules are important not just to me, but to all journalist and the readers so
that we can control the information gets out and that the writing isn't hurting
anybody, ruining their image, or misleading them.
